How to sell your furniture before leaving the UAE

How to sell your furniture before leaving the UAE

A simple six-week plan to sell your furniture and appliances before you move out of the UAE, from pricing to safe hand-over.

Leaving the UAE usually comes with a deadline: a last working day, a lease end date, a flight. Furniture is the biggest thing to sort out, and the people who sell it well start early and stay organised. This guide gives you a plan you can follow.

Start four to six weeks before you go

Most buyers want an item within a week or two, so you need enough time to find them without dropping your price in a panic. Four to six weeks is comfortable. If you have less, start today and be ready to price a little lower.

Decide what to sell first

Make a list of everything you plan to sell, then split it into two groups:

  • Sell now: things you will not miss, such as spare furniture, extra appliances, decor and outdoor items.
  • Sell last: things you need until the end, such as your bed, sofa, fridge and dining table. List them early with a collection date close to your move, so buyers know when they can pick them up.

Take photos that sell

Good photos are the biggest difference between a listing that sells in two days and one that sits for two weeks.

  • Clean and tidy the item first. Take it out of a cluttered room if you can.
  • Use daylight and a plain background.
  • Show the whole item, then close-ups of the material, labels and any marks or damage.
  • Add a photo with something familiar next to it, such as a chair, to show the size.

On ExpatsDeals you can add up to 8 photos, and the first one becomes the cover. Make it your best.

Price it fairly

Buyers know you are leaving, and they expect a good price. Search for similar items to see what they are worth, then price yours a little below. A few rules of thumb:

  • Used furniture usually sells for a fraction of the new price. The newer and better known the brand, the higher the share.
  • Leave a little room for negotiation, but do not inflate the price. An honest price sells faster.
  • Group items. A bedroom set or a kitchen bundle often sells faster than separate pieces.
  • If you are unsure, choose “Ask for price” and see how many people write to you.

Write a clear listing

A good listing answers the questions buyers always ask. Include:

  • the item, the brand and how old it is;
  • the size, so buyers know it fits;
  • the condition, including any marks or damage;
  • the reason you are selling, and when it can be collected.

Keep phone numbers, emails and links out of the text. ExpatsDeals blocks them to stop spam, and buyers can message you through the site.

Add your leaving date

When you post, tick “Leaving the UAE” and choose your date. Your listing then appears on the Moving Out Sales page, with a badge that shows how many days you have left. Buyers who want a bargain look there first. You can also tick “I’m selling most of my home items” if you are clearing a whole home.

Meet and hand over safely

  • Use the site to message buyers first. Move to calls or WhatsApp only when you are comfortable.
  • Let the buyer collect the item, and agree a time you are at home with someone else present if possible.
  • Check that the payment has arrived in your account before the item leaves. Do not trust a screenshot.
  • Ask your building management whether you need a gate pass or a moving permit for large items. Many buildings require one.

Plan for what does not sell

Some things will be left a week before you fly. Decide now what you will do with them: give them to friends, donate them to a charity, or post them in your building’s community group. Do not wait until the last day.

Mark it as sold

When an item goes, mark it as sold in My Account so that buyers do not keep writing to you. If your plans change, you can mark it as available again.
